Instant voice and video communications technology is allowing thousands of young people in China to turn themselves into Internet entertainers. They produce their own live shows and can make a decent living.

Highlights:
- YY earned more than 3.6 billion yuan, or 590 million US dollars in 2014, more than half of which came from the virtual gifts that fans purchased from the platform.
- Other instant video communities such as 9158 are also catching up with YY’s user numbers and are going beyond the 10 million monthly user threshold as well.
