Thousands protest in Caracas in support of Venezuelan opposition leader

Jailed opposition leader, Leopoldo Lopez, was the reason behind efforts to rally protests against the government in Venezuela. President Nicolas Maduro maintains the opposition leader is a criminal.

CCTV America’s Stephen Gibbs filed this report from Caracas.

Highlights:

  • Around 5,000 people gathered in downtown Caracas for a protest that lasted several hours. Many were dressed in white, in a show of solidarity, to denounce government claims the opposition is seeking violent change.
  • The call to take to the streets was not organized, or endorsed, by Venezuela’s main opposition coalition. On Friday, two former Latin American Presidents attempted to visit him in jail. They were denied access.
  • Venezuela is in the midst of an economic crisis, which is by far the worst in the region.
