Malaysian Airlines set for major job cuts

The man tasked with saving Malaysia’s beleaguered national airline Malaysia Airlines addressed the media today for the first time since taking on his new job. Christoph Mueller took over at the start of last month, ahead of schedule, and began by preparing the airlines’ 20,000 strong workforce for major job cuts. Malaysia Airlines was in deep financial trouble even before it was hit last year by the twin calamities of the disappearance of Flight MH370 and shooting down over Ukraine of flight MH17. Highlights:

  • Starting June 1st, staff began receving layoff notices, with some 6000 jobs almost one-third of the workforce to go.
  • Malaysia Airlines is also relooking at its contracts with thousands of vendors, and will reduce frequency and capacity on some routes.
