Apartment building in Northeast China explodes

Four people have died and eight others have been injured after a powerful explosion rocked an apartment complex in Huludao city, Liaoning Province, on Friday morning.

The blast took place at around 5 a.m. in the Longgang district. Video footage from the site shows one half of a building having collapsed owing to the intensity of the explosion.

Firefighters say that five homes have been completely destroyed. They’ve managed to rescue 12 residents so far. However, two people are still unaccounted for.

A preliminary investigation has suggested that the blast was triggered by a gas leak.

This is the second such explosion that has hit the neighborhood in the past two weeks.

Earlier, a suspected gas leak had led to an explosion on May 31, resulting in the death of two people and injuring 12 others.
