Ciudad Juarez is the biggest border town in Mexico. This city of 1.5 million people has been seeing a big growth in industry in recent years, but it also has had a reputation for being a center of violence and crime. Many young people consider criminal activities the only way out of poverty.
Martin Nunez was one of those people. The 39-year-old spent more than half of his life in prison. But then he changed his life and is now helping others to change, too. Nunez has created a family by taking in kids whose own families were torn apart by violence. He provides them shelter in a home he calls “Manantial de Luz” or “The Source of Light.”
It provides a nurturing environment for the children and gives them an opportunity to choose a life free from crime and drugs. This year Martin and his family took their first family vacation. During a 15 hour drive in an old school bus, many of the children saw the sea for the very first time in their lives.
