Environmentalist in Colombia promotes pratical use of old, used tires

World Today

What to do with worn out tires? They take thousands of years to decompose, and when not disposed of properly, they can become a health hazard. Bogot learned that the hard way.

CCTV America’s Michelle Begue has more.

Highlights:

  • In 2014, 600,000 tires in Begue were set ablaze in a tire yard. 12,000 citizens in surrounding neighborhoods were exposed to toxic and potentially cancer causing fumes.
  • Alexandra Posada is a local celebrity there, known as the “tire lady.” She said more than 5,000 people have traveled to her home to see how she builds with tires. Most importantly she said she wants to be an example of sustainable living.
