Japan continues to see large numbers of tourists. Some of that has to do with the deadly MERS outbreak in South Korea — many visitors to Japan said they changed their destination from South Korea due to concerns about the ongoing health crisis.

Japan sees steady inflow of foreign tourists

Japan continues to see large numbers of tourists. Some of that has to do with the deadly MERS outbreak in South Korea -- many visitors to Japan said they changed their destination from South Korea due to concerns about the ongoing health crisis.

Highlights:

    • Officials say Japan had 1.64 million visitors in May, an increase of nearly 50 percent from the previous year.
    • 70 percent of the tourists were from the Asian region, notably South Korea, China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan. Chinese tourists tops the number of visitors to Japan.
    • Japanese retail and tourism market are increasing their efforts to cater to Chinese tourists as the number is expected to further increase .
