Bogota explores electric public transportation systems

World Today

Throughout Latin America, there is growing interest in converting public transportation systems into cleaner, electric-based systems. Cities like Bogota are taking on the challenge to be green despite the costs. CCTV America’s Michelle Begue filed this report from Bogota.

Other details:

  • Over the next year, Bogota will test the electric bus to ensure it is a viable alternative, as Bogota’s TransMilenio Rapid Transit system replaces their old fleet.
  • TransMilenio has been widely praised around the world for its green efforts. It is credited for reducing carbon emission by 350,000 tonnes annually, and it is the first major transport system in the world to earn Kyoto carbon credits.
  • The TransMilenio system has its share of criticism as Bogota has outgrown the system and become overcrowded.
