This is the king’s ninth visit to China, the first taking place almost 30 years ago, according to Belgian media reports.

Xi spoke highly of the contribution the royal family has made towards bilateral relations. He also emphasized that China has developed socialism with Chinese characteristics, a path that is based on its history, culture, traditions as well as the status quo.

King Philippe described the visit so far as “impressive” and said he’s sure the two countries can expect more cooperation in the future.

Earlier Wednesday, Xi’s wife Peng Liyuan and Queen Mathilde of Belgium visited the Beijing Experimental School for the Deaf, and the People’s Liberation Army Academy of Art. Philippe also laid a wreath at the Monument to the People’s Heroes in Beijing.
