Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman escaped through a tunnel over a kilometer long, that connected to the shower in his prison cell.

In this CCTV Americas Now interview with Elaine Reyes, CCTV Political Correspondent Laura Carlsen discusses some of the details surrounding “El Chapo’s” elaborate escape.

“El Chapo” Guzman has been called the most powerful drug trafficker in Mexico. His capture in February 2014 was lauded as a huge achievement for the Mexican government in its efforts to eradicate the drug trade.

As Carlsen explains, it seems almost inevitable that prison insiders and high-ranking officials were involved in the escape. The tunnel ran underground to a newly-constructed house near the penitentiary where presumably the dirt from the excavation of the tunnel was placed.

Carlsen quotes recent official statements that speculate that “El Chapo” may be in Mexico City, the Sinaloa mountains, Ecuador or Belize. Elaine Reyes asks Carlsen what Guzman’s jailbreak will mean for the reputation of Mexico’s President Enrique Pena Nieto, as well as relations. between Mexico and the United States.
