US-Mexico border seeing reduction in illegal migration

World Today

The U.S. government says the number of Central American migrants trying to cross into the United States has dramatically declined during the last quarter of 2014 and through the first couple of months of this year. Immigration experts say the drop is due to Mexico’s efforts to confront the child migrant crisis.

There’s a crackdown on Mexico’s southern border. According to government statistics, during the latter part of 2014 and the first couple months of this year, Mexico has deported about 3,800 Central American minors. That’s some 50 percent more than during the same period last year. U.S. Officials point to gang violence in Central America as a key reason for the number of child migrants. As long as there’s wide-spread poverty and insecurity, experts predict the migrants – many of them children – will keep on coming.
