The 125th anniversary of Dutch artist Vincent van Gogh’s death was marked on Wednesday with a giant flower display in Amsterdam and a small gathering at his grave in France.
A portrait of the artist made of 50,000 flowers was displayed at Museumplein in Amsterdam and will be open to visitors until the end of the week, while two descendants of the painter laid flowers at his grave in Auvers-sur-Oise, northern France.
Born in 1853 in Netherlands, Vincent van Gogh died at 37 in the French town on July 29, 1890, reportedly from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. After his death, the post-impressionist painter would become one of the most influential artists in the world.
