Goverment nullifies refund of bride price after a marriage is dissolved

In some countries in Asia, the Pacific Islands and Africa, a man often pays a price to a woman’s family to have her hand in marriage. The “bride price” could be refunded to the groom in some societies if the marriage fails. CCTV’s Isabel Nakirya filed this report.

  • The bride price in Uganda will now be voluntary and a refund can not be asked for when a marriage breaks up.
  • In Uganda, a groom is often required to give a sum of money or range of goods to a bride’s family.
