At least five people were killed in Afghanistan’s capital, after an explosion on Monday at Kabul International Airport. Officials say a suicide bomber drove into a checkpoint near the airport’s entrance. Dozens were injured, including a child.

One witness described the moments after the bomb detonated, “I saw a body on the ground and a person was on fire burning inside a vehicle near the attack scene”.

Kabul was already on high alert after a recent string of deadly attacks. Dozens have been killed in some of the worst violence the capital has experienced in years. The incidents are a blow to hopes that peace talks will resume between the Afghan government and the Taliban.

Afghanistan’s President, Ashraf Ghani, has been seeking support from Pakistan to revive those discussions. However, on Monday, Ghani said the assaults in the past week are a sign the Taliban is still active in Pakistan, and accused Islamabad of not doing enough to fight it.

“We want the Pakistani government to take practical action against those circles who are committing rebellious acts against Afghanistan. We want them to stop their rebellious acts,” Ghani said.
 
Peace talks were recently put in limbo after the Taliban acknowledged its longtime leader, Mullah Mohammad Omar, was dead. Afghanistan says he died in 2013. A successor was named, but there are reports of infighting. Regional experts say that power struggle is likely playing out in these deadly incidents, plunging the country into further instability and uncertainty.
