Cuba’s ‘private’ biz booms with new US relations

One of the reasons U.S. President Barack Obama gave for restoring diplomatic relations with Cuba and making it easier for U.S. citizens to travel to the island, was to help boost Cuba’s fledgling private businesses.

There has already been a significant increase in U.S. visitors since December, much to the delight of Cuba’s privately run tourist sector. CCTV America’s Michael Voss filed this report from Havana.

  • The number of restored classic American cars seen on the roads of Havana has increased dramatically this year. The more U.S. citizens come here, the more they want a nostalgic ride around Cuba’s capital city.
  • Today there are dozens of quality private restaurants in Havana offering good service and fine food. Many of the best restaurants now need booking in advance.
  • Cuban hotels are having trouble coping with the increasing number of visitors. The U.S. home sharing website Airbnb now lists private lodging in Cuba. Cuba is its fastest growing market ever.
