Myanmar veterans honored for service but lacking support

World Today

A small ceremony was held at the British Rangoon War Cemetery on Saturday to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II. Among those honored were Karen men who served alongside British soldiers. But this recognition by the British government has not translated to pensions. Most Karen veterans continue to live in poverty.

CCTV’s Barnaby Lo filed this report from Yangon.

More Details:

  • Thousands of Karen men fought alongside British soldiers during the Second World War. But they were not officially in the service, so they weren’t entitled to benefits afforded to veterans. It was only recently that they’ve started getting assistance from a small charity.
