Miami beaches feel the heat from Cuban competition

World Today

In a new era of U.S.-Cuba relations, new waves of enthusiastic American tourists are expected to crash onto the island nation’s shores. That’s causing anxiety among Cuba’s tropical neighbors, who are worried about the new competition for tourist dollars. Miami is no exception.

As CCTV’s Nitza Soledad Perez reported, officials in Miami believe the answer to attracting more tourists, is right under their feet.

More details:

  • Years of dredging offshore to combat erosion have wiped out area supplies of undersea sand. One possible solution is to truck in sand from mines in Central Florida that can match the color.
  • Using foreign sand is pricey and would disqualify Miami from using any U.S. government funds to help pay for a project that could cost as much as $40 million.
