Diplomatic tension rises between Venezuela and Colombia

This is not the first time in recent years that relations between Venezuela and Colombia have dramatically deteriorated. In 2010, the two countries, briefly, broke off diplomatic relations.

  • President Hugo Chavez once told his countrymen in Venezuela to prepare for war. Chavez was furious that that Colombia had signed a military cooperation agreement with his long-time nemesis: the United States.
  • Colombia’s President Uribe, meanwhile, said Chavez was allowing leftist FARC rebels to operate from a safe haven in Venezuela.
