UNESCO recognizes amazing Inca Trails in Peru

One of Peru’s top draws for visitors is the “lost city” of Machu Picchu. UNESCO named the ruins of this ancient “Inca” civilization a World Heritage site in 1981. This year, it named Machu Picchu’s network of 30,000 kilometers of roadways a World Heritage site as well.

The Inca trails wind through mountainous terrain that consists of lush, tropical forests, spectacular terraces, and ancient temples and sanctuaries. Machu Picchu is located at an altitude of 2,430 meters (almost 8,000 feet).

Hiking the Inca trails is rigorous and can take days. Several touring companies offer special trekking packages leaving from Cusco, that provide traveler’s with tents, camping equipment, a porter to transport bags and a cook to prepare meals.
