Ukraine and pro-Russian rebels agree to new truce

World Today

Ukraine and pro-Russian rebels have agreed to end shelling starting September 1, in a conflict that has so far claimed 7,000 lives.

The latest ceasefire comes after a peace deal signed in Minsk in February was violated regularly by both sides. However, plans for local elections and a special governance status for rebel-held areas could pose a further threat to peace in Eastern Ukraine.

CCTV’s Julia Lyubova filed this report from Moscow.
