Scientists are predicting the current El Niño weather pattern could be one of the strongest on record and that has countries bordering the Pacific Ocean preparing as best they can.

The South American country of Peru is among those preparing. Officials there are bracing for what they say could be an “extraordinary” weather season.

  • El Niño is marked by a warming of sea surface temperatures across the Pacific Ocean. For Peru it means floods and torrential rains on its arid coast, and experts say this one could be particularly intense.
  • In Peru, summer starts in December, which is also fishing season. There are concerns that the warm waters will drive away anchovy stocks, which prompted Peru’s fisheries minister to take action.
