China wins first Women’s Volleyball World Cup in 12 years

China overpowered Japan 3-1 to win its fourth women’s volleyball World Cup title on Sunday, Sept. 7 in Nagoya, Japan.

The victory has also helped China’s female volleyball team secure a seat in the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio, Brazil.

The Chinese team, led by coach Jenny Lang Ping, crushed the Japanese squad 25-17, 22-25, 25-21, 25-22 to claim its first World Cup crown since 2003, and its first major title since 2004 when Lang’s team won the Olympic title in Athens.

The Women’s Volleyball World Cup is comprised of 11 rounds, of which China earned 10 victories.
