Saudi Arabia says high winds toppled the crane that collapsed onto Islam’s holiest shrine in Mecca.
The death toll stands at 107, with almost 240 people injured. Initial reports say that the bulk of the dead were from Egypt, Iran and Bangladesh. Others include Pakistanis, Indians and Malaysians.
There were a number of cranes at the Grand Mosque, which is undergoing expansion and renovation. A Saudi official says this month’s Hajj will go ahead as planned. CCTV’s Susan Roberts spoke to Khaled Batirfi in Jeddah about the mood in Mecca, with the height of the Hajj just over a week away.
