Volunteers break Austrian and German laws to help migrants

Several European countries have reportedly liberally allowed a large amount of migrants from the Middle East and Africa to cross their borders without strict border controls in recent weeks. This emergency policy is technically illegal, but according to Austrian law, aiding them in any way in their journey is also an illegal act.

Hundreds of people smugglers have been arrested in recent weeks, but with Europe’s migration system unable to control all of the influx, it leaves many wondering if there should be a strict stop to the flood of migrants.

Hungary hasn’t fared well in the news recently with reports of maltreatment of migrants entering and passing through he country. CCTV’s Asieh Namdar spoke to Michael Czinkota, a professor at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C.


Hungary police use tear gas and water cannons at Serbia border

Anger and frustration is boiling over along the border of Serbia and Hungry. Police used tear gas and water cannons on people to force back hundreds of stranded refugees, who tried to get passed a razor fence. Many fought back by throwing rocks and other objects.

Although hundreds of thousands of refugees are crossing into Europe on the Eastern side of the Mediterranean, relatively few attempt the journey from the Western side. Last year, just 7,000 illegal immigrants crossed into mainland Spain from Northern Africa.
