China and Malaysia step up cooperation on defense

Nearly 2,000 military personnel from China and Malaysia will take part in a five-day military exercise on land and sea.

It’s the latest development in a strengthening comprehensive strategic partnership, but up until now defense cooperation has lagged behind political, economic and social ties.

CCTV’s Rian Maelzer filed this report from Subang, Malaysia.

More details:

  • Special forces from China and Malaysia formed a guard of honor for the two countries’ senior military officials. These field exercises follow table-top simulations last year and large-scale disaster relief exercises that the two countries co-hosted earlier this year.
  • China has sent more than 800 personnel, as well as three ships, helicopters and aircraft. The goal is to improve the efficiency of joint operations, to exchange information and build camaraderie and trust.
