Chinese President Xi Jinping has arrived in Washington state to begin his first official state visit as Chinese President in the United States.

Xi’s plane, an Air China Boeing 747, landed Tuesday at Paine Field in Everett about 30 miles north of Seattle. He was greeted by a group that included Washington Governor Jay Inslee, the former Washington governor and U.S. ambassador to China Gary Locke. Seattle Mayor Ed Murray was also in attendance.

Xi will spend his first day in the U.S. in a Seattle hotel, where talks between five U.S. governors and six of their Chinese counterparts will take place over issues that include improving energy efficiency in buildings, modernizing electrical grids and commercializing renewable energy.

On Wednesday, Xi is set to tour Boeing’s large airplane production plant in Everett and travel to Microsoft’s headquarters in Redmond, Washington.

He leaves the Seattle area on Thursday for a White House state dinner on Friday.

Xi Jinping’s address to a crowd at a banquet in Seattle, Washington

Xi Jinping delivered a policy speech Tuesday evening where he spoke on a number of issues. The biggest themes President Xi spoke on were very personal stories of poverty and his experiences with it as a youth. Xi described how “opening up” policies have changed lives for the Chinese.

The Chinese President said there is still much left to do with 200 million people in China still living below the poverty line.

When speaking about the Chinese market, Xi said the government’s role in the markets is to prevent panic and provide stabilization and he said that there is “no basis” for continued devaluation of the Chinese currency.

Xi also addressed human rights and the judicial system in China and said reforms are “ongoing” in China and that they are “ready to discuss” these reforms with the U.S.

When it came to cyber-security Chinese President Xi Jinping said that violations of cyber-security are “crimes that must be punished” and he called for “high level” dialogue with the U.S.
Xi said that China is committed to a peaceful rise and is not interested in hegemony.
