Russia’s parliament authorizes use of military force on Syria

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has new firepower as Russian warplanes are now backing up his army’s defense against rebels and Islamic militants, a controversial new player in Syria’s four-year civil war.

Russia’s Defense Ministry confirmed that Russian warplanes began conducting airstrikes on Syria Wednesday, as CCTV’s Anya Ardayeva filed this report from Moscow.


Russia and US divided over defeating ISIL in Syria

Russia and the United States have given sharply differing views of how to combat ISIL in Syria. At a Russian-chaired meeting of the United Nations Security Council in New York, Moscow defended its use of airstrikes in Syria. The U.S. accused Russia of fighting terrorism as an excuse to prop up the Syrian government. CCTV America’s Nathan King filed this report.
