What is China’s National Day?

After a long civil war and war against Japanese aggression, the People’s Republic of China Central People’s Government committee held it’s first meeting on Oct. 1, 1949. 

On this day, Chairman Mao Zedong, Vice-Chairman Zhu De, Liu Shaoqi, the Soong Ching Ling, Li Chi-shen, Zhang Lan and all other committee members swore an oath of office and the Central People’s government was established.

Just a few hours later, a founding ceremony was held in Beijing’s Tiananmen Square where Chairman Mao declared: “The Central people’s government has been established.”

In Beijing, more than 300,000 soldiers and civilians participated in the founding ceremony and parade. On Dec. 3, 1949, the Central People’s Government Council passed a resolution making Oct. 1 of each year China’s National Day.
