The Heat: De-radicalization and the Islamic state

The Heat

In this episode of The Heat, we look at the term de-radicalization and how it works in this global war on terrorism. Is it even possible?

The global fight against the so-called Islamic State is playing out online and in the news, with more and more extreme acts by the terrorist group. Thousands of young men and women from North America, Europe and elsewhere in the Middle East flock to Syria and Iraq to join ISIL.

CCTV America’s Jim Spellman reports.

The Heat began its discussion with this panel.

  • From Atlanta in the U.S. state of Georgia, Anthony Lemieux joined the conversation. Lemieux is a professor at Georgia State University and a researcher and investigator into global terrorism.
  • From Oslo, Norway, Tore Bjorgo is a professor at Norwegian Police University College and author of “Leaving Terrorism Behind.”

The discussion continued:

  • From Norway, Yousef Bartho Assidiq is a former radical and co-founder of a de-radicalization non-profit called ‘Just Unity.’
  • From Toronto, Mubin Shaikh is a former radical turned informant for the Canadian Security Intelligence Service. Shaikh is the author of “Undercover Jihadi.”
