An adoptee who found her biological family in Colombia, helps others

Americas Now

Three years ago, Americas Now recorded the journey of a Colombian woman reuniting with her biological family. Kidnapped as a child, she was legally adopted by a family in the United States, who had no idea about her abduction.

After a long, agonizing search that at times seemed hopeless, Nicole finally located her birth mother and family in Colombia. Today, Nicole Culverhouse is helping other adoptees find theirs.

Correspondent Michelle Begue, who reported the original piece “My Name Is Nicole” on “Americas Now,” catches up with Nicole Culverhouse again to see what life is like for her today.

Michelle finds that Nicole’s story has brought hope to others and several adoptees have contacted Nicole seeking her guidance. Michelle interviews a couple of the adoptees Nicole is trying to help reunite with their biological families.

Nicole is also starting a fundraiser online to help adoptees who can’t afford DNA tests. Adoptees from Colombia are using social media to find support and help search for their biological families.  One social network group is called “Adopted From Colombia” and has almost 1,000 members.

Michelle also introduces us to Nicole’s family, including her brother and father and daughters who were not seen in the first report.

Check out Michelle’s update on this remarkable kidnapping story that spans two countries, thousands of miles and three decades.
