Wingsuit flying contest kicks off in southwest China

More than 30 contestants from 12 countries took part in a wingsuit flying contest on Monday during the AOPA-China Fly-In airshow in Zhaotong, southwest China’s Yunnan Province.

The “Wings for Love” 2015 World Cup is the first of its kind held by the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association of China during its annual air show.

Jumping off a mountain-top platform at an altitude of some 2,800 meters (9,186 feet), 38 daredevils in nine teams conducted trial flight Monday morning to get familiar with the flight route and the geographic features of the site.

Christina, one of the contestants described the place and the landscape as “amazing”.

Also held on Monday was a newly designed event, Flight Video contest, with one of the flyers in a team working as a cameraman and shooting video of the other team members.

The contests mainly test individual flyer’s skills and cooperation among team members, according to the event organizer.

The “Wings for Love” 2015 World Cup will last through Saturday.
