The online battle against ISIL

World Today

Hacking group Anonymous declared it’s going to war with the Islamic State.

In a video declaration, which came out when ISIL used its own video to threaten attacks in Washington, D.C., an anonymous spokesperson wore a Guy Fawkes mask and spoke in French: “We are going to launch the biggest operation ever against you. Expect many cyber attacks. War has been declared.”

Western governments have struggled to combat ISIL’s message online. Twitter has shut down some ISIL-linked accounts, but increasingly the terrorists are turning to encrypted messaging services like Telegram to distribute propaganda and possibly plan attacks.
