The U.S. job market is improving by leaps and bounds, but the nature of work has definitely changed since the recession.

Looking for a handyman, a dog walker, or a cat sitter? What about an independent accountant? They’re all part of an emerging workforce called the “gig economy.”

There are lots of jobs to be had that are less permanent and more seasonal. A recent study by Freelancers Union and Upwork.com said there are nearly 54 million freelancers in America.
