China, US to make key cyber security announcement

A key outcome of Chinese president Xi Jinping’s U.S. visit earlier this year was the resurrection of cyber security dialogue between the U.S. and China. And this week, officials from the two countries will meet in Washington to further work together on this issue.

CCTV America White House Correspondent Jessica Stone breaks down what is to come of these critical meetings.

The details:

  • The Chinese delegation says, yes, an agreement has been reached, but a U.S. Department of Homeland Security spokesperson said they have “no comment”.
  • The dialogue meetings started Tuesday and are due to go through Wednesday, when an anticipated document detailing the outcome of the meetings should be released.
  • A meeting so far lasted around 3 hours and included the Chinese State Councilor and Minister of Public Security, Guo Shengkun as well as the U.S. Attorney General and Homeland Security secretary.

 

A press release from the Chinese Ministry of Public Security said the two sides have agreed on the following:

  • “Guideline on Fighting Cyber Crimes and Related Issues”
  • Hotline for senior cyber and law enforcement officials
  • Law-enforcement cooperation on individual cases, cyber-based terror, law-enforcement training
  • That the next round of the dialogue will be held next June
