Families of Spanish Franco-era refugees seek justice

The aftermath of Syria’s civil war has been compared to the that of one that tore Spain apart in the late 1930’s. The exodus of people fleeing political persecution under the regime of General Francisco Franco.

Families of the victims have yet to forgive or forget. Crimes committed over 75 years ago, weigh on their minds. They’re seeking justice still today, through an unlikely third-party: Argentina.

It was the Mexican writer Octavio Paz who once said that Mexicans descended from the Aztecs, Peruvians from the Incas and Argentinians: from the boats.

In the late 19th and early 20th century, over six million immigrants arrived in Argentina, many staying in a building now known as the Immigration museum in Buenos Aires.
