Tales of horror in Thailand's shrimping industry

Horrific accounts of forced labor are coming out of Thailand, with thousands basically working as slaves. While governments around the world have urged Thailand to address human rights concerns, it's easier said than done.

Thailand’s Foreign Ministry insists the European Union has acknowledged the governments attempt to try and stop slave labor in the fishing industry. The statement came in reaction to an EU warning that Thailand ‘promptly’ address human rights and slavery issues in the industry and warns that an import ban could be placed on Thai seafood.

The U.S. and Japan are top importers of Thai frozen and processed shrimp exports according to the Thai Frozen Foods Association.

Illegal migrants from Myanmar and Cambodia are routinely overworked and cheated out of their wages, with many forced onto boats against their will.
