Central African Republic votes for new leaders

World Today

People in the Central African Republic are going to the polls on Wednesday. It is finally a chance for the ordinary people of Central African Republic to re-establish their country’s reputation for stability and democracy.

Many voters hope a new president will lead the country to greater stability after years of violence.

With 30 candidates competing for the presidency, most in the country predict the vote will go to a run-off in late January.

The presence of so many peacekeepers on the streets is the evidence the country remains volatile. Security concerns have repeatedly delayed this vote.

But whatever the final result, a peaceful and credible election would be a victory for all.
