Hundreds of German assault complaints focus on foreigners

The German government wants to make it easier to deport foreigners who commit sex crimes. Almost 600 women claim they were assaulted or robbed in the city of Cologne on New Year’s Eve, but critics say immigrants aren’t the issue.

Two weeks on, regional politicians are still apologizing to a German public demanding a robust response.

More than 580 criminal complaints have been filed so far. Around half involve a sexual assault on New Years’ Eve in Cologne.

Some worry that the situation frames the debate around immigration, rather than gender.
