German police have arrested three Algerians suspected of planning a terrorist attack in Berlin. One of them appears to have entered the country posing as a Syrian refugee, which could put more pressure on German Chancellor Angela Merkel, amid growing backlash at her asylum policies.

The heightened security follows hundreds of sexual assaults targeting women that took place here on New Year’s Eve, blamed mainly on North African migrants. It added fuel to a growing backlash against Germany’s open-door asylum policies.

The arrests of three Algerians on Thursday may further fan the anti-immigrant flames. One of the suspects had apparently posed as a Syrian refugee.
