University in Colombia trying innovative technique to stop Zika

World Today

Colombian Health Officials are reporting a rise in Zika virus cases with more than 31,000 infections confirmed. From Colombia too, though, comes word of developments in a scientific strategy to neutralize the mosquitoes spreading the Zika virus.

CCTV America’s Michelle Begue reports.

The University of Antioquia is breeding mosquitoes with the Wolbachia bacteria.

The experiment is part of an international program supported by Australia, Indonesia, Vietnam and Brazil. It started back in 2011 to eliminate Dengue.

The number of Zika cases in Colombia continues to grow, making it the second largest Zika outbreak in the Americas after Brazil.

With the work being done by the University of Antioquia, there are hopes here that Colombia will rise above victim status to become a Zika victor.
