Remembering MH-370 victims two years after disappearance

World Today

Two years since Malaysia Airlines flight MH-370 disappeared, relatives of the victims gathered for a commemoration. The memorial comes just days after debris, suspected of belonging to the ill-fated plane, was found off the coast of Mozambique. CCTV’s Rian Maelzer reports from Kuala Lumpur.

There were poems and music, dance and heart-felt remembrances of loved ones. A biker club, some senior opposition politicians and people from around the world via video message also showed their support for those whose loved ones disappeared on board the flight

There were fewer tears than last year at what was described as a celebration of life. But with the mystery still unsolved, the emotional wounds remain raw.

“People keep saying ‘oh, just get over it. It’s been two years.’ And we’re like, no, how If something happens to someone you love, if someone tells you your loved one passed away, the first thing you are going to ask is “what happened.” And if they tell you ‘we don’t know’ your not going to be able to accept that answer,” Grace Nathan, daughter of an MH-370 passenger said.

Also attending was the American Blaine Gibson who last week discovered a piece of debris in African waters that experts say almost certainly came from a Boeing 777.

“I’m here today because I really care about this plane and making sure the search goes on, to give the families the answers that they deserve,” Gibson said.

Families worry that the search for MH-370 will be halted by around the middle of the year if teams fail to find the aircraft after scouring the 120,000 square kilometer area.

“If the money runs out but there’s some fantastic donor out there whose willing to fund the search again or continue it, then I’ll be very, very grateful, we’ll all be very grateful. But if they stop it I can’t do anything. We can only ask and plead that they carry on,” said wife of an MH-370 in-flight supervisor Jacquita Gonzales.

The anniversary ceremony was, once again, organized by the families of the victims. Malaysia’s government has yet to hold any official commemoration or remembrance of the tragedy.
