The Chinese-American community in New York is pouring in hundreds of thousands of dollars to help former New York police officer, Peter Liang. In February, Liang was found guilty of second-degree manslaughter and official misconduct over the shooting death of an unarmed Brooklyn resident in a public housing stairwell.

For decades, the Lin Sing Association has been the go-to place for many Chinese Americans in need of help out. Now, cash and check donations have been pouring in support of former New York police officer, Peter Liang.

The conviction outraged Chinese American communities across the nation, who say Liang is being used as a scapegoat after other police officers, mostly, white men who weren’t indicted in similar high-profile cases involving the deaths of unarmed black men.

The sentencing is in mid-April, and Liang could face up to 15 years in prison. But his supporters are petitioning for the court to set aside the guilty verdict or sentence him to probation instead.
