Greece tries to clear lucrative port city while migrants remain stranded

World Today

There are more than 50,000 refugees and migrants stranded in Greece as their route to northern Europe has been blocked.

Many fear they’ll be sent back to Turkey. CCTV’s Kate Parkinson reports from Greece.

Piraeus Port is one of the busiest passenger ports in Europe. It’s now also home to around 4,500 refugees.

They’ve been here for weeks, but with the peak tourist season around the corner the Greek government wants them to move to official accommodation centers.

Conditions are not good, there is little food and poor sanitation.

The United Nations refugee agency said with the deteriorating humanitarian situation the best option is for the refugees to move. They’re trying to reassure people that the official camps are not detention centers.
