Picture books recapture the industry growth in China

Last week, author Cao Wenxuan became the first Chinese person to win the prestigious Hans Christian Andersen Prize for children’s books, and the international recognition is boosting sales of his books in Shanghai.

After Cao Wenxuan was named the winner of the 60-year-old prize, Shanghai Book City set up a special display of his works in its children’s book section. Many of those books have sold out, and store managers say the award is proof the domestic industry is developing.

According to a report released by the Shanghai Municipal Press & Publication Bureau, China’s children’s book sales have grown at an average 10 percent annually in the past decade. Last year, children’s books accounted for 40 percent of the overall book industry in the country. This rising demand has created many opportunities for book stores that target specifically in children.
