Chibok girls anniversary: New ‘proof of life’ video surfaces

World Today

A somber anniversary in Nigeria – it’s been two long years since Boko Haram abducted nearly 300 schoolgirls in the middle of the night.

Although some managed to escape, more than 200 are still missing. Now, a new video has surfaced showing some of the girls might still be alive, giving their families a new reason for hope.

CCTV’s Kelechi Emekalam reports from Abuja.

Ostensibly, the video is supposed to act as a proof of life for the kidnapped girls. The government says it is treating the video with extreme caution.

In April the 14th, 2014, men from Boko Haram broke into the Government Girls Secondary School in Chibok and kidnapped over 200 of them. The last time they were seen alive was in a video released in 2014.

Now with this new video, a ray of hope abounds for several who have been calling for their release for the past 2 years.

Video emerges of the taken girls of Nigeria

In exclusive video obtained by CNN, 15 of the kidnapped Chibok girls are seen for the first time since their capture two years ago.

They are asked their names and where they were taken from. Each one answers, “Chibok Government Secondary School,” according to CNN, who also showed the video to some of the girls mothers. It was the first time they saw their daughters since the girls were taken.

The video was made by the girls captors and given to negotiators as “proof of life”.
