The Heat: Japan’s Security Laws

The Heat

New security laws allow Japanese forces to fight overseas for the first time since World War II.

The change in policy is the biggest shift in Japan’s defense posture in more than 70 years – it lifts a decades-old, self-imposed ban on collective self-defense.

CCTV’s John Gilmore reports.

To discuss Japan’s new security laws:

  • Takesato Watanabe, a professor emeritus at Doshisha University in Japan.
  • Senior Captain Zhang Junshe, vice president of China’s Naval Research Institute.
  • Yoshikazu Kato, columnist for the New York Times Chinese web edition and an author.
  • Eunjung Lim, a lecturer on Korea Studies at Johns Hopkins University.
