2016 NYF badgeAt the ceremony held Tuesday night in Las Vegas, CCTV America Managing Editor, Mei Yan, and Full Frame Executive Producer, Monna Kashfi, accepted a Gold World Medal in the Human Interest category for the 18-minute film Jen Bricker: When Can’t is a Four-Letter Word. The film also received a Silver World Medal for Human Concerns.

Jen Bricker was born without legs, yet lives a complete life. Some might say she’s accomplished enough for two people. As Full Frame’s short film shows, because of what she lacks – a pair of legs – the she lives helps distill the best of what it means to be human. Sahar Sarshar produced the film. Videographer Don Stanke shot it. CCTV America Senior Editor Janne Syrjanen did the editing.

Full Frame also garnered a Bronze World Medal for the magazine report, “No Strings Attached: Puppets Supporting Children throughout the World.”

CCTV America’s Chief Photographer, Andrew Smith, and Alaska-based Aerial Photographer, Daniel Zatz, won a Silver World Medal in the Best Camerawork category for On Thin Ice: The People of the North. As the documentary shows, the top of our world is an ecosystem in distress—warming twice as fast as any other region on earth. Rising Arctic temperatures could help unleash an eco-apocalypse upon the rest of the planet. To make this film, Smith and Zatz shot video – from air, land, and sea – in one of the harshest ecosystems on earth.

CCTV America received two more medals, Silver and a Bronze, for the film:“Reinventing Cuba.” Correspondent Gerry Hadden and Producer Armando Guerra interviewed Cuban artists, entrepreneurs and fledgling baseball stars – people “who don’t make the news, but who are at the heart of Cuban society and culture” – to create a grassroots portrait of a nation facing abrupt transition. What will Cuba look like after its long Cold War with Washington is over? gives viewers a glimpse.

The battle over mining for gold in Marmato

The battle over mining for gold in Marmato

The town of Marmato, in Central Colombia, sits on top a mountain of gold. Its people have been living off of it for centuries, mining the precious metal through mostly small scale, artisanal operations.
