A community in Mexico thrives by finding riches in nature

Americas Now

This past week was Earth Day which began in the United States in 1970. Today, it is celebrated around the world.  Its purpose is to raise public perception about the environment and inspire people to fight for a cleaner planet.

Some observe Earth Day by planting trees.  This week’s Game Changer on “Americas Now” teaches people to plant crops and helps them harvest their food.

Juan Carlos Hidalgo works in the southern Mexican state of Chiapas – one of the country’s poorest regions. But this young man looked around the area and instead of seeing scarcity saw abundance. He created a project based on the idea of permaculture – or using the patterns seen in nature to find solutions.

Juan Carlos is also developing bike-cars to work as bike-taxis in the tourist center of San Cristóbal.  He’s creating electric generators as well.
