Drug runners "super tunnel" discovered in San Diego

Authorities in California have discovered a “super tunnel” used for running drugs from Mexico.
It’s located outside San Diego and run by the cartel made infamous by its former leader Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman – who used a tunnel to escape prison.
CCTV’s Mike Kirsch reports.

For several months – U.S. Border Patrol agents patrolling the U.S.- Mexico border in the San Diego suburb of Otay Mesa had been paying close attention to this suspicious looking U.S. business along the border – a business claiming to sell wooden pallets.  Authorities say it wasn’t doing any real business, or legal business at all, but, was a front for the illegal business of smuggling illegal narcotics.

U.S. agents caught and arrested six individuals accused of operating the tunnel. And confiscated one ton of cocaine with a street value of $22 million along with seven tons of marijuana.

Agents discovered a hole in the ground among the pallets and once they crawled down into it, they realized it was a drug tunnel snaking beneath a fenced-in lot of pallets. It runs under the nearby U.S. Mexico border fence stretching underground almost half a mile (800 meters) to a family’s home in Tijuana, Mexico.

The tunnel was less than a meter (3 feet) wide, equipped with lights, ventilation, a rail system and a motorized freight elevator capable of carrying up to 10 people.
