Ireland’s leaders agreed on a new government more than a month after February’s inconclusive election results. The country will have a minority government for the first time in history.

Details on the new government will be announced later this week. Many in Ireland want the new government to start preparing the country for a possible Brexit. CCTV correspondent Lourda Sexton reports.

Nine weeks of political deadlock has ended in Ireland, as the two biggest parties overcome decades of rivalry.

After weeks of fraught negotiations an agreement on a minority government was finally reached. This will see the governing party Fine Gael led a minority administration with the support of its main rival Fianna Fail.

Together both parties have dominated Irish politics but neither have ever shared power.

While political negotiations continue on the finer details of a new government, the EU referendum remains only weeks away. Many were eager to see the government’s focus shift to the potential consequences for Ireland in the event of a British exit from the EU.
